Gaming high on Trinity agenda

Trinity College, a proudly Catholic coeducational college in the heart of Beenleigh, strives to grow and diversify to fulfil the needs of their students as they navigate their way to successful futures.

The College’s focused curriculum caters to a wide range of academic, vocational, sporting and cultural endeavours, allowing every student to harness their unique interests and talents to create a pathway to their future.

This focus is complemented by the College’s contemporary learning resources and state of the art technology.

In addition to its vast curriculum, Trinity College offers a broad range of extra-curricular opportunities including Esports.

Esports, also known as electronic sports, is a form of video game competition. Students train and compete in teams, developing essential skills such as strategic game play, teamwork and communication, while networking with other school communities. It is fast paced, competitive online gaming that combines the speed and intensity of real time strategy with role-playing elements.

Not only can students compete in the Esport program, they can further enhance their skills and knowledge through the College’s tailored subject, Games and Interactive Media.

Year 8 student Mason recommends the sport saying: “I really enjoy Esports because it helps me to explore my creative side when it comes to technology, it isn’t just about coding or game play, it is about being involved in the design (behind the scenes) of games and enhancing my overall technological skills.”

This year the College has had great success from their Esports program. The Rocket League team competed in the XP Queensland championships and the Super Smash Bros. team competed in the Chisholm Slam, both making the quarter-finals.

Trinity’s Rainbow Six Siege team finished runners up in the XP Queensland Championship while the League of Legends team is currently competing in the Chisholm Invitational Tournament.

Miss Cassandra Thatcher the Business/ICT Curriculum Leader at the College gives voice to her curriculum area: “Esports is a billion-dollar industry, with a reach of more than 450 million viewers. This emerging industry will bring a broad range of career opportunities to our graduates.”

Alongside the College’s Esports extra-curricular program, they also offer a learning pathway for grade 7-12 students passionate about video games. Gaming is becoming a significant component of young people’s lives, and game-based learning (GBL) is a rapidly growing field of education that ensures students are learning 21st century skills whilst also having fun.

Junior students at Trinity College have the opportunity to study Games and Interactive Media, a subject taught through the Media curriculum and encompasses the processes of game development.

Senior students can continue their study in this field through an internally offered nationally recognised Certificate III in Information Technology majoring in Animation – one of the many vocational courses the College offers as part of its portfolio of senior subject qualifications that can contribute to a student’s ATAR while preparing them for a variety of career pathways.
