Fox shelters from rain

A cheeky fox found shelter on the backyard patio of a Rochedale South home during recent rain.

Resident Luke Hillier was working from home when he noticed the fox lounging on his outside couch.

“I just spotted the fox through the glass sliding doors out to the back patio,” Mr Hillier said.

The doors are heavily tinted, so the fox didn’t notice Mr Hillier snapping its portrait.

Mr Hillier, who lives near bushland around Passerine and Exilis streets, said it was the first time he had seen the fox.

“We get wallabies in our yard daily, but we’ve never seen a fox,” he said.

The fox was certainly comfortable, hanging out all day – even after the Hillier children had arrived home from school.

“The kids were beside themselves with excitement and stayed to watch him for about half an hour,” Mr Hillier said.

“I noticed it just after 9am when the rain was really heavy and fully expected it to scamper off once it stopped, but I guess the patio couch is just too comfy,” Mr Hillier said.

“It’s been fascinating to see it rest all day with its radar ears alert and twitching all the while.”

Information from the Queensland Government shows foxes are considered an invasive species in Australia because they threaten agriculture and native species.

They were deliberately introduced for hunting in the 1870s in southern Victoria and by 1930 they occupied most of southern Australia.

Local governments are responsible for fox control.
