I hope you have all been having safe and happy school holidays.
Unfortunately for Logan families, we had to postpone the ImagiNation Children’s Festival until May, with heavy rain over the weekend.
At the time of writing this column, one man had tragically lost his life in floodwaters and another had to be rescued from the roof of his car.
It is a timely and important reminder that if it’s flooded – forget it.
The time you save is never worth the price it could cost you.
In 2022, our city was hit with the worst flooding along the Logan River since 1974.
More than 280 homes were inundated, hundreds more had water on their properties and dozens of roads were cut off when the rain bomb hit Logan.
The community rallied to help those in need.
The mud army stood up to clean properties, while the Australian Defence Force came out to help vulnerable people and those with huge amounts of debris.
The clean up was massive, led by the community and supported by council.
It was an amazing example of what we can do when we work together.
But for many residents, the recovery from the impact of these floods was drawn out and challenging – as they faced significant issues around the response by insurance companies in our area.
Last August, the Federal Government started an inquiry into insurers’ responses to major flood claims from 2022.
This Wednesday (April 10), the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Economics will hold a public hearing at the Beenleigh Events Centre, and they’re calling on residents and businesses to contribute their stories.
It’s important that we tell the inquiry about our experiences.
