Fitzgerald Avenue makeover complete

Major upgrades to Fitzgerald Avenue in Springwood are now complete after almost a decade of planning.

Locals identified the road as a “key priority” for upgrades in the area in 2016.

Eight years and $2.7 million later, the road now includes a 2.5m pedestrian concrete walkway, newly planted trees, a ‘chill out’ tree shelter, seating, and new stormwater drainage.

The construction process, which started on 12 March this year, included removing the existing median strip and line marking around traffic islands, reinstating the south median strip, and building a new kerb and channel.

Local treasurer and federal Member for Rankin Jim Chalmers, whose government co-funded the project with Logan City Council, said the upgrades were a “great outcome”.

“This is all about making it easier and more enjoyable to live and work in our community,” he said.

“With more space for pedestrians and cyclists, more shade and a lot more greenery, Fitzgerald Avenue has never looked better and that’s great for our local community but also for our local economy.

“This is an example of what we can achieve when we work together in the best interests of locals.”

The Australian government contributed $1.5 million and local council $1.2 million to fund the upgrades.
