A 30-strong team of volunteers smartened up Marsden’s JJ Smith Park Tuesday in one of the city’s first Clean Up Australia events.
Six cubic metres of rubbish was removed from the play areas and gardens of Marsden’s JJ Smith Park, a large open space used by children for play and families for weekend barbecues.
Cleanaway and council employees gave their time to comb the park for three hours, removing rubbish from car tyres and prams to coffee cups and pizza boxes.
Recyclable items were separated.
Dozens of other events are being planned for the actual day on Sunday.
Council’s environment chair Jon Raven, encouraged the community to join Sunday’s effort.
“Come out … and do what you can to really improve our environment,” Cr Raven said.
“Our parks and waterways are places that we love and we know our kids love to play there and we really want those places to be clean and safe.”
