Final tweaks submitted for Greenbank Shopping Centre development, after years long delays

Changes have been unveiled for a delayed plan that would see Greenbank Shopping Centre upgraded and anchored by a discount department store.

Region Group (RG), who own up to 100 shopping centres Australia-wide, including Greenbank Shopping Centre and Jimboomba Junction Shopping Centre, has been planning to renovate Greenbank Shopping Centre for over two years.

In 2023, RG announced their renovation plans, which it hoped would be complete by 2026.

Last week, the company submitted “minor” tweaks to its pre-approved development application, which RG’s Wayne Moodie said were to reflect market changes.

“The new masterplan still embodies the key tenets of the previous design, and consideration is being given to the future stages of planning, and how they will be incorporated into the larger masterplan,” Mr Moodie said.

The group hopes the renovated Greenbank Shopping Centre will become the new town centre and a hub locals will gravitate towards for more than just retail purposes.

“The new design has incorporated community feedback throughout and places emphasis on community-minded spaces that use rest points, integrated landscaping and sub-tropical green spaces to create a place for great memories and community connectivity,” Mr Moodie said.

“This delay has given us the opportunity to deliver an even better precinct for the community – allowing us to further refine the plans to ensure the design, tenant mix, and community amenities are best-in-class for locals, including integrated customer service elements with direct-to-boot and parcel pickup services.”

The amended plans will see the first stages of construction, which will ‘refresh’ the current shopping centre, in 2027. The final centre will be completed sometime after that.

A new discount department store will anchor the centre, which will also be home to a range of speciality and food and beverage retailers.

Woolworths anchors the centre currently, according to RG’s website.

Other developments nearby to the Greenbank Shopping Centre, in the Flagstone Priority Development area, including a council library, community facility, state health hub, new school and train station have all been proposed to keep up with population demand.

By 2041, the Greenbank area is expected to reach a population of 74,000. The 2021 census recorded that Greenbank had about 9600 residents.

“The expansion of the Centre is perfectly timed to meet the needs of the fast-growing community, offering a convenient shopping experience in a central location for both existing and future Greenbank residents,” Mr Moodie said.

“This will be truly transformative not only in terms of investment, construction and employment but in creating a community-focused destination that locals can enjoy for decades to come.”
