Five houses originally set to be demolished for the Faster Rail are being repurposed for social housing.

Four three-bedroom homes and one four-bedroom home were last week relocated to Woodridge and Kingston to provide cheaper housing for local families.

These are just five of more than 130 properties resumed by the state government so far to make way for the $5.75 billion rail project.

A total of 300 properties were initially earmarked for demolition.

Local mum-of-two Tanika Kelly was one of the first to move into the new social homes.

“We lived in motels for the first three months [after moving to Queensland]… while I applied for easily more than 100 rentals,” Ms Kelly said.

“But I’m on limited income, I couldn’t find work and didn’t have the room to bring in a housemate to help with the rent going forward, so this beautiful new home is just fantastic.

“We’re all feeling so much more relaxed and settled. My daughter is enjoying school for the first time in ages and my little boy can ride his bike and play ball safely in the massive fenced yard.

“We’re going to put in a vege patch and, now, I can look for work again or start establishing my home nail salon.”
