Fare play – cash-free cruising in union uproar

Logan City bus drivers have logged their ninth week of refusing to collect fares from passengers.

Over 500 Transport Workers Union (TWU) drivers from Clarks Logan City Buses, and Kinetic on the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast, have participated in almost nine weeks of industrial action calling for greater government investment in wages and working conditions.

TWU Queensland’s director of organising Josh Millroy said the local public transport system was strained by a growing population.

“TWU members have been campaigning for safer buses, fair pay and bus drivers having more say in decisions that affect them, as a solution to attract and retain drivers,” he said.

“The fight for $35 per hour is part of the TWU’s wider bus industry campaign to win government investment in our public transport.

“The state government needs to step up and make a real investment in our public transport to maintain and grow safe, fair standards.”
