Times are tough and it can be hard to take the family out to do something nice when everything seems so expensive – so here is our list of things you can do for free or at an extremely low cost in Logan.
Get out in nature…
There are so many nature parks and playgrounds in Logan, that you can enjoy with the family for free – here are just a couple of our favourite ones.
Daisy Hill Koala Park
Nestled among the eucalyptus trees and surrounded by wildlife, is the Daisy Hill Koala Centre.
Open from 10am to 4pm, the centre allows you to connect with nature and learn more about koalas and their habitat, and for kids there are plenty of interactive educational activities to do.
They have guided wildlife ranger tours and talks and you may have the chance to meet one of the three resident rescue koalas – Boondi, Molly and Wynter.
Throughout the park there is also a range of walking trails and mountain bike tracks, one of which leads to a beautiful hidden oasis – the old quarry water hole.
Located 253 Daisy Hill Road in Daisy Hill Conservation Park.
Berrinba Wetlands
Berrinba Wetlands is a nature lover’s haven in the heart of Logan, featuring 80 hectares of natural beauty and recreational facilities.
There are 430,000 native plants, 100 nesting boxes for birds, possums and gliders, and 8km of walking tracks
You can expect to see a range of wildlife, including pale-headed rosellas, pelicans, owls, tawny frogmouths, tusked frogs, bandicoots, gliders, bearded dragons, turtles and red-necked wallabies.
There are also playgrounds, BBQs and picnic areas if the kids aren’t into the walking trails. Located on Wayne Goss Drive, Berrinba.
Get some exercise…
If you don’t have the money to join a gym or just don’t want to exercise alone, there are plenty of free or low-cost exercise groups you can join.
There are a range of running and walking groups around Logan that are free to join, including groups at Berrinba Wetlands, Underwood Park, Metro Sports Park, Logan Central Plaza and the Hyperdome.
There is also a range of low-cost exercise classes like bootcamps, yoga, tai chi and strength programs that you can join for $5 and sometimes under.
Just visit Logan City Council’s website, and you will find a range of classes under their Active and Healthy Program.
A History lesson…
If you want to teach the kids about the history of Logan or if you want to learn something yourself, there are plenty of places you can go for free or at an extremely low-cost to step back in time and explore Logan’s history.
Mayes Cottage
Step back in time to the 1800s when you enter Mayes Cottage.
Built in 1887, by the Mayes family who owned the home for almost 100 years, this now home museum is filled with history and stories of the past.
Open Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 10:30 to 4pm. Located at 20 Mawarra Street, Kingston.
Living Museum of Logan
This is a contemporary social history museum where you can see, hear and experience the stories of the people who made the City of Logan what it is today.
Browse the First Nations space and hear digital stories from Logan’s elders.
Open from 10am to 4pm, Tuesday to Saturday.
Logan Village Museum
This museum is a treasure trove of stories, artifacts, and memories that paint a vivid picture of Logan Village’s history.
Immerse yourself in tales of pioneers, local traditions, and cultural milestones that have shaped the town and engage with displays and interactive experiences throughout six different historical buildings.
Located on Wharf Street, Logan Village. Entry is $3.
Enjoy the Arts…
If you love art, there are plenty of places to enjoy it for free around town.
Logan Art Gallery
Logan Art Gallery celebrates local talent with a diverse work of visual artists, craftworkers and designers. They have a range of art exhibitions on throughout the year that are free to enjoy.
Located on the corner of Wembley Road and Jacaranda Avenue, Logan Central.
Beenleigh Historical Village and Museum
If you didn’t know, the Beenleigh Historical Village and Museum has a small art gallery filled with local artist’s work, including paintings, pottery, knitted work and arts and crafts. It’s free for anyone to browse, you can even purchase something if you like what you see.
Located at 205 Main St, Beenleigh.
