Death toll climbs on Logan roads

Nearly two people have died on Logan roads every month this year, prompting renewed calls for road safety awareness as the year’s busiest period approaches.

In the past few days alone, a 63-year-old motorcyclist from Slacks Creek was killed in a collision with a flatbed truck in Underwood, and a 60-year-old Beenleigh motorcyclist died in a hit-and-run in west Logan.

Manager of PCYC’s road safety program Braking the Cycle, Seevali Ratnakara, said these tragedies underscored the importance of addressing the Fatal Five.

“Road deaths are always a tragedy, and there are various reasons they occur,” Ms Ratnakara said.

“Speeding, driving under the influence, failure to wear seatbelts, fatigue, and distractions are all leading causes of road trauma.”

Heading into the Christmas period, roads will be jam-packed with Logan residents getting in last minute shopping and heading on holidays.

“Drivers should consider the community around them while out on the road,” Ms Ratnakara said.

“Avoiding those Fatal Five will see drivers staying safe on the roads this holiday season.”

RACQ advocacy manager, Joshua Cooney said said Christmas was a notoriously busy time on the roads.

He said the 2024 road death toll was likely to surpass 2022’s 13-year high.

“In that year, 297 people died on Queensland roads and we’re tracking towards exceeding that figure,” Mr Cooney said.

“Before Covid, the road toll was trending down and if it continued on that trajectory, road deaths would be closer to 200 but tragically we’ve gone backwards.

“Despite new cars getting safer with upgraded technology, far too many people are still dying on our roads. It’s unacceptable and government must intervene and work to improve our road safety culture.”
