Courting success at Shailer Park

A $1.53 million multisport hall has been completed at Shailer Park State High School.

The hall was built as a partnership between the school and Logan Basketball and is one of the first projects built under a state government “community use of schools” program.

Member for Springwood Mick de Brenni said students and Thunder would have access to a world-class, fit-for-purpose facility, complete with LED scoreboard and two replay screens.

“We know Logan Basketball is surging in popularity, to the point where court availability was a challenge during the Thunder’s season,” he said.

Logan Basketball General Manager Mitch Young said the refurbished sports hall will make a huge difference to the club, which has over 2000 members and 120 teams across age groups from four to seven years through to seniors.

“To have a state-of-the-art facility, 150 metres from our current back door, to cater to our growing membership and indoor sport in the area is awesome,” Mr Young said.

“Our goal is to turn the precinct into a community sporting hub with Logan Basketball, Shailer Park State High School, Loganholme Lightning and Cornubia Park Netball all sharing resources to help each community organisation and grow sport and recreation in Logan.”

Shailer Park State High School Principal Dorothea Jensen said the refurbishment was of huge benefit to the school and local community.

“For our school, the refurbishment of our new sports and cultural precinct means for the first time all students can fit into the one space,” Mrs Jensen said.

“We haven’t been able to hold whole school events and invite our community to our school before, now we can hold whole of school assemblies.

“The refurbishment will encourage our students to be more active and involved in sports as well as provide a performance space for our Arts students.”
