Corey Parker passes on the fun with new carnival

NRL legend Corey Parker will give Logan’s rising stars a glimpse into his childhood with a new rugby league competition launching in his hometown.

This month, the CP9s tournament – standing for the Corey Parker 9s – will welcome boys and girls of all skill levels to Beenleigh’s Bill Norris Oval on 22 February, providing an opportunity for both seasoned players and newcomers to a day of fast-paced rugby league action.

The Daisy Hill local created the CP9s with the goal of providing an experience reminiscent of his own childhood rugby league carnivals.

“I wanted to create a tournament where everyone feels included, no matter their background or experience with rugby league,” he said.

“Some of my fondest memories growing up were attending carnivals, feeling the excitement, the nerves, and the energy of the day.

That’s the experience I want to replicate for the kids of Logan.”

The CP9s tournament will cater to players aged 8 to 16 and will feature an All Abilities program, something Mr Parker is particularly passionate about.

“It was important to me that this event was for everyone,” he said.

“Throughout my career, I’ve worked closely with All Abilities programs and seen firsthand the joy and fulfillment rugby league can bring to people who may not always get the opportunity to participate.”

Beyond the on-field action, the CP9s will offer a carnival-like atmosphere, with food trucks, a DJ, and colourful team jerseys designed to reflect the event’s inclusive spirit.

Mr Parker said that while winning is part of the game, the main focus is on fun and creating lasting memories.

“At the end of the day, we want kids walking away from the tournament saying, ‘That was such a great time’,” he said.

“I met new people, had fun, and made some amazing memories.”

One unique aspect of the CP9s is that participants do not need to be registered QRL rugby league players.

“The tournament provides a fantastic opportunity for kids who may have never played before to experience the game in a less structured setting,” Mr Parker said.

“They don’t have to sign up for a whole season or commit to a club; they can just come down and have a go.”

Spectators are encouraged to attend, with family, friends, and local rugby league fans all welcome to watch the action unfold.

For those unable to make it in person, the event will also be live-streamed, allowing supporters from afar to tune in.

Mr Parker, who has dedicated much of his post-playing career to developing grassroots rugby league, sees CP9s as an opportunity to foster a love for the game in a new generation of players.

“Some kids might go on to play at higher levels, but even if they don’t, we want them to walk away with a positive experience that keeps them connected to the sport,” he said.

The opening ceremony will start at 8am, with entry tickets costing $5 dollars per adult.
