Commuters face 17 days of replacement rail buses

Thousands of Logan commuters, families and holiday travellers are being pushed onto replacement buses as a 17-day shutdown removes trains from every Beenleigh-line station in the city.

The disruption began on September 19 and will stretch into the first week of Term 4, with regular services not expected to return until October 12.

Head of Translink Dean Helm said travellers should expect longer journeys.

“We understand these closures will affect people’s daily travel, and we thank customers for their patience while this important work is carried out,” Mr Helm said.

“Many of these works can only be completed safely when trains are not running, which is why temporary closures are necessary.”

Local work includes track, station, overpass and signalling activity for the Loganlea station relocation, alongside piling, earthworks, drainage and investigations for Logan and Gold Coast Faster Rail.

Faster Rail crews will also carry out station precinct works between Kuraby and Beenleigh.

The closure also supports Cross River Rail, new train-control technology and general maintenance.

Corridor works between Beenleigh and Varsity Lakes will include track, signalling, cabling and drainage for the European Train Control System.

One of the largest tasks will be the installation of a 44m pedestrian overpass weighing 93 tonnes at Moorooka station.

Cross River Rail Delivery Authority chief executive Graeme Newton said the installation demonstrated why an extended closure was required.

“This is a complex logistical exercise that needs to take place over several days, and can only be done safely and efficiently while trains aren’t running,” Mr Newton said.

“We’ve scheduled the majority of the works during the school holidays to reduce impacts where possible, but customers should still allow extra travel time and plan ahead before travelling,” Mr Helm said.

From Tuesday 6 October, trains will return through Logan as combined Beenleigh and Gold Coast services between Varsity Lakes and Banoon.

Those trains will operate as all-stops services, with no express trains and minor timetable changes.

Trains will still not run between Banoon and Boggo Road, with replacement buses needed for that section until Sunday 11 October.

The partial return will coincide with the first week of Term 4, with passengers travelling towards Brisbane still required to transfer to replacement buses.

Regular services are scheduled to resume from the first service on Monday 12 October.

Mr Helm urged passengers to check their trip before leaving home, particularly as arrangements change during the closure.

“The best thing customers can do is use the Translink app or journey planner, plan ahead and follow staff directions while travelling,” he said.

Translink warns that protected industrial action could change the published arrangements.
