After completing the 48km Kokoda Challenge last year, John Paul College student Lachlan Barnes wanted to find out how much further he could go.
Now he and five other Year 12 students are preparing to take on the full 96km Kokoda Challenge, joined by one teacher and backed by the Changez Health & Fitness community at Daisy Hill.
Lachlan said last year’s challenge had left a lasting mark.
“It pushed me well outside my comfort zone and showed me what you can achieve when you work together and don’t give up,” he said.
“After finishing the 48km, I wanted to challenge myself even further by taking on the full 96km event.”
The team has been preparing with training hikes ranging from 25km to 50km, as well as an overnight camp at O’Reilly’s to practise nutrition, hydration, clothing changes and managing fatigue.
Lachlan said balancing training with Year 12 had been the hardest part.
“Between school, assignments, exams and other responsibilities, fitting in long training sessions has required discipline and commitment,” he said.
“The physical training is challenging, but the mental side — staying motivated when you’re tired — is just as important.”
Changez Health & Fitness used its 10-year Daisy Hill facility milestone to support the team, with more than 60 people attending a fundraiser for the students and the Kokoda Youth Foundation.
The event has raised $2260, with support from Changez members, guests, Cr Jon Raven and the wider community.
Lachlan said the support felt personal.
“I’ve grown up at Changez, so it feels very personal,” he said.
“The gym has always been more than a place to train; it’s a community that genuinely cares about helping others.”
He said the challenge reflected values of resilience, mateship, courage and service to others.
“There’s also a strong connection between Changez and the veteran community, with many Defence and DVA members who understand the significance of Kokoda and the values it represents,” Lachlan said.
“Their encouragement, generosity and belief in what we’re doing has been incredibly motivating.”
