Vulnerable families will this Christmas receive gifts thanks to the combined effort of Logan’s community, corporate and political leaders.
A new initiative will see Christmas hampers filled with non-perishable items and toys gifted to local families who “have no spare change after every other bill”.
The hamper iniative was launched last week at Chatswood Central Shopping Centre in Springwood.
It is being run by the shopping centre, the Logan East Community Neighbourhood Association, UnitingCare and Springwood MP Mick de Brenni.
LECNA manager Cassie Paton said this year’s campaign came at a time of increased pressure on families.
“We know many Logan households are experiencing food insecurity, with the rising cost of living pushing more people into financial stress,” she said.
“Inflation on food and everyday items is going up everywhere around the world but rent is one of the most significant expense items for households, with many spending up to 44% of their household income to keep a roof over their head.”
A collection cage has been set up outside the centre’s Woolworths, which will accept donations until 6 December.
“Christmas is a time for connection and generosity, and our community always steps up to support those in need,” Mr de Brenni said.
“But mostly, I’m very proud to work across the community and corporate sectors to bring hope and joy to families who may be doing it tough, and I’m grateful for the support of the Lancini Group and everyone who contributes.”
Items that can be donated include non-perishable food items, Christmas treats, toys and gifts for children of all ages, and essential household items.
Tomas Lancini, the general manager of the centre’s owner Lancini Property Group, said initiatives like the Christmas Hamper Drive were more critical than ever.
“We’re proud to partner with Mick and local organisations to support such an important cause and play a part in helping local families during the festive season,” he said.
“This initiative highlights the strength and generosity of the Logan community, and we’re delighted to provide a space for donations that will bring joy to those in need.”
