Celebrating our wonderful women

Every year Attorney General and Minister for Women, Shannon Fentiman is blown away by the incredible work that women are doing to ensure everyone can participate in the Logan community.

Minister Fentiman is celebrating Logan women by hosting the Wonderful Women of Waterford awards as part of Queensland Women’s week.

“We all benefit when women and girls across Logan are able to participate fully in all social, economic and cultural opportunities,” Ms Fentiman said.

Over the past few decades, there have been significant strides regarding women’s rights and the treatment of women.

Ms Fentiman says more recently we have seen a growing number of women and girls coming
forward to call out sexism and demanding equality.

“Despite some gains, we know there is much more work to do to achieve gender equality,” she said.

The state government has recently announced a $1 billion investment which will mean that 14,00 children can now access free kindy.

As well as this, the federal government has implemented a plan for cheaper childcare and a modernised paid parental leave scheme in the federal budget.

This is in response to the challenges women with caring responsibilities face when re-entering the workforce or working full-time.

“Economic security is key to empowering women across Logan,” Ms Fentiman said.

With her team, Ms Fentiman is continuing to expand free apprenticeships and free TAFE to help more women reskill and upskill.

“No one should be discriminated against on the basis of their gender or race,” she said.
