AS federal candidates all but ignore Logan City Council’s wishlist in the lead up to Saturday’s election, mayor Darren Power says it’s important to keep pushing.
Cr Power said candidates were taking a cautious approach in the face of economic pressures, including the cost of living and inflation.
Of 16 “critical infrastructure” projects which council deems a priority for the city, the promise of funding from candidates was minor.
The Australian Labor Party ($800,000) and Liberal National Party ($2 million) have both pledged funding to CCTV safety camera and monitoring room upgrades.
The ALP has promised $22.5 million for the Loganlea Rd upgrade and $357,500 towards the Underwood Rd bus turnaround.
Cr Power welcomed commitments to urgent care medical centres (ALP), revisiting the Inland Rail alignment (ALP), establishing a skills laboratory at the TAFE Loganlea campus (ALP) and $7.3 million for Beenleigh’s Hammel Park redevelopment (LNP).
When the election was called, council launched a “Stand up for Logan” campaign, calling on local candidates to prioritise “a better future for our city”.
“Our population is growing and our city needs to grow with it through the timely delivery of infrastructure to ensure liveability, economic growth and sustainability,” Cr Power said.
“With half a million people set to live here by 2041, we will need state-of-the-art digital infrastructure, good community facilities, free-flowing roads and healthy environments.
“Council will continue advocating for our city’s needs as it’s important to work together across all levels of government.”
