Cadets raise thousands for veterans

Local teenagers learning to remember and serve have raised thousands of dollars for struggling veterans.

Over two days this month, the Logan City Community Cadets (LCCC) fundraised more than $2600 dollars for Mates4Mates, a charity that provides mental health and physical rehabilitation services to Australian Defence Force veterans.

LCCC’s activity coordinator, and medical and recruitment officer Anthea Chase-Currier said the group was committed to serving the community.

The group’s motto is to serve, learn and remember.

“Once a year we choose an organisation and raise funds for them,” Ms Chase-Currier said.

“We recognise organisations that help our veterans, and Mates4Mates supports our service men and women.

LCCC is an independent, not-for-profit organisation that teaches community and life skills to people aged 11-17.

Ms Chase-Currier said locals should attend LCCC’s open day to meet the staff, and learn more about the group and what it does.

“We teach boys and girls life skills, respect, all about serving our community, being good citizens, how to build bridges,” she said.

“We teach navigation, first aid, how to cook, how to survive and survival skills, and leadership skills.”

The open day is on 9 November from 9am at the Browns Plains Cadet Depot.

Ms Chase-Currier said those who cannot make the open day are welcome to participate in the LCCC’s three-week free trial, starting in November.

Teens interested in joining the cadets can attend the group’s weekly Wednesday meetings, free of charge.
