Local builder James Kaye built his Rochedale South home with his own hands.
It was the first house funded by his company Methodic Building Group, and he liked it so much he decided to live there.
“It was originally a house that had a fire go through it,” Mr Kaye said.
“We bought the property with the old house on it a few years ago and decided to rebuild.”
Mr Kaye built a large five-bedroom, three-bathroom house on the 1115sqm block.
It features 2.7m ceilings, a timber staircase leading to the second level, a kitchen and butler’s pantry, and large windows offering views of the expansive backyard.
Outside is an alfresco entertaining area Mr Kaye said was perfect for outdoor cooking.
“I’m really into barbequing and smoking so we do that pretty much every second night,” he said.
“And that’s why we built the deck.
“The original plan was to install a pizza oven there, but I never got round to it.”
He said there was plenty of potential for the addition of more than just a pizza oven.
“There’s easily enough room for a pool, and enough side access for the machinery to build it.”
For the last two years the house has homed Mr Kaye, his wife and their two daughters.
“It wasn’t actually meant to be for us, but we moved in,” he said.
“We’ve really enjoyed living here and it’s going to be tough to say goodbye.
“Especially because we’re now downgrading to an old place at Burbank.”
But Mr Kaye said he needed the extra space the Burbank property offered so he could store his building gear.
He said he would miss the liveability of the Rochedale South home.
“It’s got all the functions of a nice modern house, such as a fully ducted aircon system, but it has a really good family atmosphere.
“There’s outdoor living, and great views so you can your kids playing outside from pretty much every angle.”
For Mr Kaye and the Methodic Building Group, the building process of the Rochedale South home was costly.
“We were building during peak Covid, so it was a very interesting time,” he said.
“We were alright, because all the suppliers were local and we were able to get the materials we needed, but all the price hikes were happening at the time.”
He said they created a home unique to that area.
“Rochedale South is predominately made up of 600sqm blocks, but there’s a little pocket in there with 1100sqm blocks like this one,” Mr Kaye said.
