Big weekend delays expected on M1

PEOPLE are being urged to avoid the M1 through Springwood over the weekend, with major works to a new bridge taking place.
From 7pm Friday until 5am Sunday, two bridge decks will be connected, reducing the M1 northbound to one lane and 40km/hr.
Delays of up to 60 minutes are expected during peak Saturday travel times, so motorists are advised to allow extra travel time, or seek an alternative route, a TMR statement said.
“This is one of the state’s busiest roads, with more than 150,000 vehicles using this stretch of the M1 daily,” TMR South Coast regional director Andrew Wheeler said.
“While speed reductions, lane closures and delays during construction can often be a source of frustration, once finished the M1 upgrade will reduce travel time, improve safety and increase traffic flow.
“This weekend delays are expected, particularly on Saturday from 9am, and between 5pm and 7pm, so I strongly recommend motorists plan their journeys well in advance, and where possible seek an alternative route.
“I thank motorists for their patience while this essential roadwork is underway, and urge them to remain patient travelling through the area, both for their own safety and the safety of workers along the M1.”
The roadwork is to pour concrete for the final stage of the new four-lane northbound bridge over Logan Road.
Workers will “stitch”the two bridge decks together.
