Advocacy doesn’t end here for council

This Saturday will mark the end of a six-week federal election campaign.

It’s fair to say the commitments that have been placed on the table by candidates is a sign of the times.

In elections gone by we have seen politicians open the purse strings, but with inflation and cost of living pressures, it appears that candidates are taking a cautious approach.

That’s not to say what we’ve seen committed to the City of Logan in the past few weeks isn’t positive for our future.

Right from the get-go council has called on local candidates to prioritise a better future for our city.

As a rapidly growing city, expected to be home to half a million people by 2041, it is crucial to deliver important infrastructure to ensure liveability, economic growth and sustainability.

Council put forward and advocated for 16 projects that we believe have the potential to make a big difference to our city.

Of those projects the ALP ($800,000) and LNP ($2 million) have both pledged funding to CCTV safety camera and room upgrades. The ALP has also promised $22.5 million for the Loganlea Rd upgrade and $357,500 towards the Underwood Rd bus turnaround.

Outside of the 16 projects, there have also been commitments to other projects that I believe will add to the city’s liveability.

These include funding for urgent care medical centres (ALP), revisiting the Inland Rail alignment (ALP), establishing a $2.3 million skills laboratory at the TAFE Loganlea campus (ALP) and $7.3 million for Beenleigh’s Hammel Park redevelopment (LNP).

The right to vote is a responsibility not to be taken lightly and for those of you who can vote on Saturday I encourage you to consider the best candidate to represent the needs of the city in Canberra.

For myself and the council team it doesn’t end here, we will continue to advocate for this city and work with whichever party forms government to achieve the best outcomes for Logan.
