A playground built with science

A ‘next-generation’ playground is ready for use at the $55 million riverside community Sequana at Logan Reserve.

The concept is to deliver an all-ages, all abilities play experience for residents and the broader Logan Reserve community.

Sequana Park’s playground spans 4000sqm in the heart of the Logan River fronting development.

The community now features over 8.6ha of open space equating to 35% of the development.

Brisbane-based play designer Urban Play was appointed to design and construct the playground, coined as “the next generation of play”.

Urban Play playspace designer Kate Heise-Seabrook says Sequana Park has been specifically crafted to embody Sequana’s vision to embrace wide-open space while inviting exploration and encouraging recreation.

“The playground has been designed to creatively complement the surrounding natural environment, seamlessly integrating into the landscape while providing a unique, nature play experience that is next level in terms of the diverse play opportunities that it presents,” she said.

“To safely engage children of a wide range of ages, the playground is split into two separate play areas with a junior and a senior zone. Each zone offers age-appropriate play activities created to stimulate every child’s sense of imagination and wonder as they engage in a range of tactile, physical, sensory, cognitive, auditory, and social play activities.”

Ms Heise-Seabrook said the play equipment had been designed to encourage intergenerational play with caregivers whether they be parents, grandparents or family or friends accompanying the child at play.

“Specific design elements of the Sequana Park play equipment have been included to increase the interaction between the child and their caregiver as they engage with the space, including an interactive range of ground-level play experiences,” she said.

“In addition, we have utilised a rubber design for the entire playground which increases the inclusive access for parents, carers, and children with entry and exit points that are also accessible for wheelchairs and walkers.”

The junior zone of Sequana Park includes a multi-deck playhouse suitable for toddlers aged over one year and includes multiple levels to be explored, a tunnel, a platform for engaging with caregivers, and a slide.

The senior zone includes a mega deck and tower which includes multiple levels, numerous sides of varying heights, and challenging banister bars. A dual round trampoline, great for encouraging coordination, a tipi carousel, and a set of swings suited to multiple ages and abilities complete the playground.

It is complemented by surrounding grassy mounds for picnicking, a kick-about area, a sheltered area with barbecue facilities, and public toilets.

More than 100 lots have been sold across four stages of the estate.
