THERE are a few Eat Sushi franchises around, and one is tucked away inside Underwood Central, just near the fruit market.
They offer a la carte, but most people opt for either the suki yaki or shabu shabu all-you-can-eat options.
Among staff, there’s a little bit of assumed knowledge. While they’ll warn you that the pan dries up pretty quick and needs topping up with sauce, be sure to ask for a set of tongs and the full range of sauces.
The tongs will save your fingers from the heat, particularly if you’re trying to master chop sticks. And the sauces will add different flavours to the meat which will be already lathered in sauce from the pan.
When ordering either the suki yaki option of shabu shabu, you’ll be given a plate full of vegetables, including a variety of mushrooms, onions, shallots, cabbage, carrots and some noodles.
You’ll also get two plates of thinly sliced beef. The only additional meat option is pork which can be ordered from the menu.
There will also be a couple of eggs which surprisingly add plenty to the flavour.
If you’re someone who feels all the cooking should be left to a chef when eating out, this is not for you. Both options are do-it-yourself.
Suki yaki is pan-fried and will suit those who like a bit of crisp to their meal. Shabu shabu is a broth which becomes more flavoursome as the meal progresses and ingredients are blended with the soup.
Whichever way you go, it’s a healthy and balanced meal, albeit with limited options.
There are some sides that can be ordered with the meal, including more eggs, some deep-fried octopus balls and edamame.
Drinks are the usual Japanese offerings of flavoured tea, perhaps some sake, or soft drinks and beers.
The seating here is comfortable, particularly if you’re able to book a booth.
There are plenty of staff wandering around who’ll help if you ask.
Sesame sauce is a gem and goes well with the suki yaki sauce. This will help diversify the dominant flavour from the pan.
Tuck in and enjoy the ride.
