Mayor: The pain never goes away

As we head into the Easter long weekend many people will take the opportunity to get away for a few days and our roads will no doubt be busy.

It also marks the first weekend in a string of long weekends ahead for the state, so I encourage everyone on the road to be vigilant about safety.

Serious road accidents have a lasting impact on any family and community and often they can be prevented. The economic, social and emotional costs of serious road trauma are far reaching and enduring.

The pain never goes away – something I know all too well having it experienced it with my younger brother passing away in a traffic accident more than 30 years ago.

Traffic accidents are the biggest killer of Australian children under 15 and the second-biggest killer of all Australians aged between 15 and 24. Again and again, there are four major factors that result in fatal car accidents – speeding, alcohol consumption, driver fatigue and distractions while driving.

Council has recently developed a new long-term strategy aimed at reducing accidents on our roads.

The SafeRoads4Logan Road Safety Strategy 2022-26 provides a way for Council, our road safety partners and the community to work towards reducing serious road trauma and making our city a safer place to live and travel.

This strategy reflects Council’s strong partnership with a wide range of experts on how we can improve road safety across the City of Logan. It outlines our priorities to meet the challenging needs for education, enforcement, and community engagement around road safety.

As a council we are committed to doing what we can to ensure everyone gets to their destination safely, but we can’t do it alone.

Road Safety is everyone’s responsibility and together we can all create safer roads.

So, if you are hitting the road this Easter long-weekend or even in just your day-to-day driving, I encourage you to take care and be considerate of others on the road so we can all arrive at our destinations safely.
