The bees are busy and the honey is flowing in Logan’s semi-rural areas.
Seeing the demand, a local business has invested in a factory to pack and label the fruits of local labour.
Jimboomba’s Hampson Honey has spent two years planning a state-of-the-art factory which was required to meet health and safety regulations.
Husband and wife team Carl and Karin Hampson have been in the beekeeping industry for over 13 years, and it’s an increasingly popular pastime.
During the recent floods, councillors were asking people to register bee hives so they could be kept above floodlines.
Hampson honey and honeycomb is already sole in retail and industrial markets, but it was difficult to compete without a way to package their produce.
“We found it really difficult to break into the retail space at a competitive price as setting up a packaging facility would require massive capital investment which is a great barrier to entry into this market” Ms Hampson said.
“Our aim was to not only set something up for ourselves, but also offer it to other retailers and food manufacturers that are looking for a one-stop shop to take care of all their packing requirements.
“We are delighted that we have now achieved our dream of having our own packing facility and can now extend this opportunity to other Australian businesses.
“Our primary focus is to offer affordable packing of Australian honey, but can also pack a multitude of other viscous liquids such as syrups and molasses. We would love to partner with other Australian businesses to see how we can support them in this space.”
Hampson Honey has launched their own brand of honey into the retail market which is now available from your nearest independent retailer.
