Beenleigh’s Josh Braam is ready to go the extra mile to help young people in crisis.
He’s aiming to run 101 miles in just 24 hours to support the Mater Young Adults Health Centre in South Brisbane.
Not bad for a guy who at 30 has been through serious addiction and mental health problems when he was younger.
Now a painter, he’ll be taking part in a gruelling 24-hour running challenge at Brisbane’s Nudgee College on September 24 and has already raised more than $19,000 for Mater’s specialist support centre for 16- to 25-year-olds.
“I took a lot of drugs when I was younger and I ended up in a dark place, so I know what it’s like when you’re desperate for help but can’t get it,” Mr Braam said.
“Luckily my life turned around when I met my wife Jacinda and today I have my own business and two beautiful kids.
“Running has been great for my physical and mental health and now I want my running to help others by raising money for Mater’s Young Adult Health Centre.”
Mr Braam started marathon running in 2019 and last year completed his first 50km run, but this month’s Butter 24 event will be his toughest challenge yet.
He’ll join other runners in a battle to complete as many laps as possible at the Nudgee College track in 24 hours, with minimal stops allowed for cramps and toilet breaks.
The Mater Young Adult Health Centre Brisbane is a specialised service providing adolescents and young adults with high-quality care, as well as uniquely tailored programs that address their emotional, social and developmental needs.
Mater Foundation executive director Andrew Thomas said fundraisers like Mr Braam were heroes of the community, helping to ensure important services were there for those who needed them the most.
