Storm season is approaching – how to be ready

Residents are being urged to prepare for the summer storm season, with the Bureau of Meteorology forecasting unusually high rainfall across parts of south-east Queensland.

Logan State Emergency Services local controller Jane Gibson recommends residents bookmark Logan City Council’s online disaster dashboard which updates information on road closures, weather warnings and power outages in real time.

Residents can also set up weather alerts from the Bureau of Meteorology or Logan Early Warning which send alerts direct to mobile phones when severe weather is approaching along with tips for staying safe.

Ms Gibson said it was helpful to prepare for potentially lengthy power outages.

She said to gather items such as medication, important documents and food for family members and pets.

Ensuring copies of identification, insurance and other important documents were available digitally or in a in a waterproof wallet removed the stress of trying to find them in an emergency, she said.

Residents are advised to check insurance covers storm and other severe weather events and the damage it causes.

Ms Gibson said newer residents should be aware there was a flood risk in Logan Village.

She said tidying up the outside of your house was beneficial before storm season.

“Cleaning gutters is always our top priority,” Ms Gibson said.

Trimming trees and clearing any excess vegetation is also recommended to prevent avoidable damage and reduce the risk of dangerous debris.

Securing loose items around the yard such as trampolines, outdoor furniture and other objects stop these from becoming dangerous during high winds.

Also ensure your household has a plan for a severe weather event and an emergency kit.

Logan Village SES is always recruiting for more volunteers, but Ms Gibson said there were more people wanting to join then they could onboard.
