Howzat! Yarrabilba’s first women’s cricket team

Yarrabilba Cricket Club has fielded its first women’s team to play three friendlies against the Loganholme Queen Cobras.

The first friendly was played in September under social rules, with Yarrabilba losing the first game.

Yarrabilba team coach Cameron Herft said even though Loganholme won the match, it was all about having fun and everyone involved did.

“All of the ladies had never played a game before and have been eagerly training every fortnight for the past three months,” Mr Herft said.

The team came together quite fast after the idea was floated by Mr Herft’s fiancé, Renee, who is also the team captain.

Mr Herft said the team had been a great opportunity for the women to have fun and make friends at the same time.

Mandy Brasser, a senior female cricket player on the team, said having an eager group of women ready to play was evidence there was a need for a women’s team.

“I never would have thought it would be possible that we’d have a local women’scricket team, and that even for me, someone who hasn’t really played, that Icould join, not feel intimidated and enjoy it.

“Being able to play allows me to stay active, learn new skills, be part of a team and make some great new friends in the process,” Ms Brasser said.

She also wants to show her daughter that mums play sport.

Many of the team members have children and she said it was important they saw that people were never too old to try something new.

“Most of us are mums so, whether you’ve got kids or not, if you enjoy cricketand want to learn, we’d love to welcome you to the program. It’s never toolate to start,” Ms Brasser said.

Registrations are $50 and include a club polo, hat, some equipment and three matches, plus the training sessions held every fortnight at McKinnon North Sports Park.

It also included a kit bag from the Yarrabilba Cricket Club, so the players could have access to all the necessary equipment.

The two clubs are working on a date to play another game, but this is yet to be confirmed due to availability within the team.

More players are welcome and Ms Brasser said she had no doubt there were more women out there who would discover the program and continue to grow the sport.

Any players with an interest in joining the team can register on PlayHQ.
