Today is the first day of spring, and in my house, that means it’s time for the annual spring clean.
If you’re feeling inspired to spend the next few weeks cleaning out cupboards, sheds and spare rooms, today’s message is for you.
While it can be tempting to throw everything in the trailer and head straight for the tip, there’s a good chance your ‘trash’ could be someone else’s treasure.
That’s exactly why we have the Logan Recycling Market.
Located at our Browns Plains Waste and Recycling Facility, the market is a place where your second-hand stuff gets a second life.
It accepts everything from furniture to bicycles, toys, appliances and building materials.
Good-quality donations can be dropped at any of council’s five waste and recycling facilities.
The market has been part of the Logan community since the mid-1990s and remains as popular as ever.
These days, it averages around 1000 transactions each weekend, or about 66 sales every hour.
That’s a great indication of just how much local people value affordable secondhand goods.
But it’s also good news for ratepayers because it saves money.
Every tonne of waste sent to landfill attracts the Queensland Government’s waste levy.
In simple terms, the more material that ends up buried in landfill, the more it costs us all.
Of course, we know not everything can be reused.
When a trip to the landfill is unavoidable, we want to make that experience as quick and easy as possible too.
That’s why we’ve recently opened a second weighbridge at the Browns Plains facility on Saturdays and Sundays, and it’s already helping reduce weekend queues.
So, as you start your spring clean this year, remember there’s more than one option to choose from.
Some items deserve a second life. Some belong in the recycling bin. And for everything else, we’re working to make all our waste and recycling facilities faster, easier and more convenient to use.
