Logan MPs name budget priorities ahead of state budget

Emergency services funding has emerged as an early priority for Logan politicians ahead of the Queensland budget, with calls for a permanent aerial fire truck at Loganlea and a clearer timeline for a new Logan Central Police Station.

Member for Waterford Shannon Fentiman is urging residents to sign a petition calling on the Queensland Government to fund a permanent aerial fire appliance for Loganlea Fire Station.

The specialised fire truck, fitted with extendable ladders and elevated platforms, is used for major industrial fires, complex rescues and incidents involving multi-storey buildings.

“Logan is one of the largest and fastest-growing cities in Australia, yet we still do not have a permanently based aerial fire appliance,” Ms Fentiman said.

She said Logan firefighters currently had to wait for aerial support to be brought in from Brisbane or the Gold Coast.

Ms Fentiman pointed to a recent fire at a Kingston tyre shop as an example of the gap in local capability.

“Aerial appliances had to be brought in from outside the city to assist our local firies,” she said.

“When emergencies happen, every minute matters.”

She said having the right equipment based locally could help firefighters contain major incidents sooner and respond more safely.

“Together, we can help ensure our local firefighters have the resources they need to respond quickly, safely and effectively,” Ms Fentiman said.

Residents can sign the petition through Ms Fentiman’s office or through the Queensland Parliament’s official petitions website.

Menber for Woodridge Cameron Dick has also used the budget lead-up to pressure the government over the promised new Logan Central Police Station.

Mr Dick said the Queensland Government needed to provide residents and local police officers with a clear update on the project, including when construction would start.

He said the 2025 State Budget identified Logan Central as needing a police station, but claimed there had been no meaningful update almost a year later.

“A year has passed since the 2025 State Budget, and the only thing that the government has delivered is more black mould at the Logan Central Police Station,” Mr Dick said.

“With the government’s 2025 Budget commitments already languishing, why would the community have any confidence in this year’s state budget?”

Mr Dick said reported mould contamination at the existing station had strengthened the case for a new, modern and purpose-built station.

“Our community and Logan police officers, who are among the hardest working police officers in Queensland, deserve to be treated better than this,” he said.

“The Crisafulli Government talks a big game on community safety and lowering the number of crime victims, but it means nothing when the government can’t even build new police stations.”

Member for Springwood Mick de Brenni said his budget priorities included affordable housing, road upgrades, community safety, school improvements, public transport and local sport and tourism projects.

“Our community wants to see a Budget that focuses on the essentials – affordable housing, safer roads, community safety, better facilities and the services that keep our communities strong,” he said.

He highlighted projects including the Safer Roads for Redlands program, M1 upgrades, school and community facility improvements, expanded transport services and the Koala Coast Eco Tourism Trail.

Mr de Brenni said community safety remained a key concern for local residents as well.

“The government must reopen and properly staff our local Police Beats they closed, get serious about crime prevention and fund security cameras at community sports facilities and provide an aerial appliance (high rise ladder truck) so firefighters can save lives across Logan and Southern Redlands.”
