Beenleigh Theatre Group is bringing a rendition of the hit comedy film Tootsie to the Crete Street Theatre this June.
The musical follows the main character Michael Dorsey (played by Adam Goodall) who is an actor that cannot keep a job.
In one last effort to make his dreams come true, he disguises himself as actress ‘Dorothy Michaels’.
Beenleigh Theatre Group president Steven Days said the musical rendition would explore two main themes.
“It’s looking at the idea of identity. Specifically, around the main character, and also ego. Those are probably the two main themes that come through,” Mr Days said.
Audiences should also expect to see the iconic Tootsie dress.
“There’s always the red sequin. That’s the iconic Tootsie dress and look … so, red sequins galore,” Mr Days said.
The Beenleigh Theatre Group also engages in more than putting on shows, hosting a local orchestra and a choir.
“We also run a youth program for after school, that goes right up into past school years as well,” Mr Days said.
“We have an adults class as well, and in that we develop their confidence, through the performance classes and the drama classes, and also singing ability and dancing as well,” he said.
The Crete Street Theatre is run by the Beenleigh Theatre Group on behalf of the Logan City Council. The theatre group has been active in the community since 1978.
The theatre group is a volunteer based company bringing live theatre to Beenleigh.
All of the front of house staff, actors and directors are volunteers who love theatre.
Mr Days said a lot of the volunteers also worked in professional theatre industries for venues around south-east Queensland.
“They come and lend out their time to us, to help develop the young people coming through, and help the new talent to develop their skills,” he said.
The Beenleigh Theatre Group is always looking for volunteers.
