Big Box Sleepout returns to Beenleigh, rallying Logan teens for a cause

High school students across Logan are being invited to spend a night outdoors as part of a youth-led effort to raise awareness and funds for homelessness.

Beenleigh Junior Quota will host its 12th Big Box Sleepout at the Beenleigh Tennis Courts, starting at 6pm on Friday, 8 May and running through to 8am the next morning.

The annual event asks students to bring sleeping bags and build their own cardboard shelters, offering a controlled overnight experience designed to highlight the realities of homelessness.

This year’s theme, “Jurassic Park”, encourages participants to dress up while taking part in the sleepout.

Organisers say the event is aimed at high school-aged students from across Logan, combining fundraising with education about homelessness in the local community.

Guest speakers are expected to share insights into the issue and the challenges faced by people without stable housing.

Participants are asked to make a $30 donation to attend and are encouraged to raise additional funds in the lead-up.

A basic sausage sizzle will be available for dinner, with proceeds contributing to the overall fundraising effort.

Junior Quota Beenleigh is made up of high school students from across Logan and is supported by senior members of Quota Beenleigh through its Training for Life project.

The group runs a range of community events throughout the year, including the Halloween Spooky Fair, Teddy Bear’s Picnic and visits to the Logan Hospital children’s ward.

Last year’s Big Box Sleepout raised more than $8,000, which was distributed to local charities.

Organisers hope to build on that result in 2026 as they continue to focus on youth homelessness.

The event also aims to encourage young people to engage with community issues early, with organisers saying experiences like the sleepout can help build understanding and inspire ongoing support for those in need.
