Celebrity TV host Paul West heads to Yarrabilba

Celebrity TV host Paul West from River Cottage Australia and sustainability entrepreneur Darryl Nichols are visiting Yarrabilba this month for their national Grow It Local community garden tour.

Held at the Yarrabilba Community Garden on Monday, 30 March, the tour is designed to help communities across Australia feel confident to grow their own food, reduce waste, connect with others and save money.

In partnership with Logan Libraries, the program also provides free online information for Logan residents to learn how to plant and harvest their own food.

Division 4 councillor Nathan St Ledger said the campaign’s founders, Paul West and Darryl Nichols, would help locals prepare their community gardens for planting herbs, vegetables and flowers.

“By learning more about gardening and composting, you can eat fresher, healthier and cheaper food directly from your own garden, while reducing waste and impacts on the environment,” he said.

“Making small changes can have a big impact.”

The event will also consist of an all-ages working bee to get the community garden back in shape, with the added benefit of sharing its location with the community and encouraging people to consider volunteering.

“Getting involved in your local community garden is also a great way to meet like-minded people and make new friends,” Cr St Ledger said.

“We are proud to be able to support this event through the Division 4 Community Benefit Fund, which will help secure fertiliser, compost and linseed oil for the garden.”

On the day, helpers can expect some light refreshments and nature play activities for children.

Participants will need to bring a water bottle, sun safe clothing and enclosed shoes, and gardening gloves if they have them.

Grow It Local Yarrabilba will run from 3.30pm to 5pm at Yarrabilba Community Garden, Shaw Street Oval on Darlington Drive.
