Local school football team claims Colours Cup

John Paul College has etched its name into The Associated Schools (TAS) sporting history, claiming the inaugural Colours Cup with a 1–0 victory over Ormiston College in First XI Girls Football.

Introduced in 2026, the Colours Cup recognises the long-standing rivalry between John Paul College and Ormiston College, a fiercely competitive fixture fuelled by a light-hearted debate over their shared burgundy and blue uniform colours.

John Paul College head of sports and activities Julie Maroske said the Colours Cup represented the pride both schools had in wearing burgundy and blue and the history of friendly competition with Ormiston College.

“Every contest between our schools is played with a strong spirit of good-natured rivalry, built on tradition and mutual respect,” she said.

“We’re proud to be the inaugural winners of the Colours Cup and to add to the legacy and connection shared between our schools.”

It was a tight competition, but John Paul College secured the historic 1–0 victory in front of an energetic Round 1 crowd.

First XI Girls Football captain Ellie Welch said the team “showed resilience under pressure.”

“There’s always a strong rivalry when we play Ormiston, so to win the first-ever Colours Cup makes it even more special,” she said.

“We’re proud to have created a piece of history for JPC.”

The Associated Schools (TAS) delivers inclusive, high-quality inter-school sporting competitions for students across Brisbane and surrounding regions. Partnering with eight co-educational schools, TAS provides meaningful sporting opportunities for both junior and senior students in a supportive and competitive environment

John Paul College principal Craig Merritt said this win “marks a powerful start to the TAS season” across the college’s sporting program.

“Our First XI Cricket team showed composure and discipline in securing a hard-fought 10-run victory, while across the day our Eagles displayed depth, resilience and a competitive spirit that reflects the strength of our community and our commitment to excellence,” he said.

John Paul College will face fellow Logan school Canterbury College for the highly anticipated Derby Round on Saturday 21, March in the finale to the TAS season.
