Vale Margaret Able

The City of Logan has lost a beloved member of our community, Margaret Able, and this week I would like to shine a light on her life.

Margaret was the wife of Graham Able, who served our city for 32 years as Councillor and Mayor.

That length of service doesn’t happen in isolation. Behind it is sacrifice, resilience and unwavering support. Throughout Graham’s entire journey in public life, Margaret was his rock.

She passed away on Australia Day.

While many of us attended barbecues or citizenship ceremonies, Graham was saying goodbye to the woman he was blessed to call his wife for 36 years.

Anyone who has served as an elected representative knows that the role takes a toll. Not just on the individual, but on their family. Late nights, difficult decisions, constant scrutiny, and time away from home become part of the job. It is often our partners who carry the quiet weight of that service, offering strength when it’s needed most and encouragement when the pressure is high.

Margaret did that with grace.

She embraced her role as Mayoress with warmth and generosity. She had served as a volunteer on the Mayoress Committee long before she took on the role, and as Mayoress she took that to the next level supporting the community through her charity work.

She never sought recognition. She simply showed up, gave her time, and helped where she could, because that was who she was.

Margaret was known for her kindness. It was genuine and deeply felt by those around her. She had a way of making people feel welcome and valued, whether through her volunteering or her friendship.

Graham has shared that he loved every single bit of her with all his heart, and that his life was made complete because she loved him. He said she was as much a part of this Council as he was because they shared everything.

As a community we mourn her loss. But we also give thanks for a life lived with purpose and compassion. We remember a beautiful soul whose generosity left a lasting mark on this city, and whose love shaped the life of a man who gave decades of service to Logan.

She will be remembered for her kindness, her quiet strength, and the love she gave so completely.

Rest in peace, Margie.
