Logan-based advocacy group Free2homeschool is celebrating a landmark win for Queensland’s home education community after the passing of new legislation.
The legislation increases the registration age limit for students, allowing them to remain registered through Year 12 – until the end of the year they turn 18.
The long-awaited change removes barriers that had previously prevented some students from completing their studies within the home education system.
“This change gives more home-educated students the same opportunity to complete their education as their peers,” Boronia Heights mum of two and Free2homeschool co-founder Patricia Fitzgerald said.
“It’s about fairness, stability, and recognising that learning doesn’t stop just because a student turns 17.”
Fellow founder Amanda Bartle said the reform was the result of years of community advocacy.
“Our community has worked tirelessly, often quietly, for years to be seen and heard,” she said.
“This recognition in parliament highlights the vital role families play in guiding and supporting learning at every stage.”
