Local legend Logan Martin OAM already has a few notches on his belt.
But the Olympic BMX gold medalist has just added another, with a new road at Springwood named in his honour.
The service road, named Logan Martin Court, was built as part of the M1 upgrade project and will provide bicycle riders access to the Veloway 1 at Springwood.
Mr Martin was the first ever person to win Olympic gold in BMX freestyle when the event was introduced at Tokyo in 2021.
He said growing up in Logan was important to him, helping craft his skills and shape the person he is.
“So to have this little piece of me here in Logan is very special,” he said.
“It’s pretty epic to have a street named after me. It made sense to be in Logan City where I grew up, spent all my childhood and my early adult life as well.
According to the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR), Mr Martin’s name was chosen for the newly-constructed road because of his Olympic success, the road’s proximity to the new V1 bicycle extension, and his long association with the Logan community.
“It makes perfect sense there is a cycle path and a street named after me,” Mr Martin said.
“I wouldn’t want to do it anywhere else.”
He said the bike road was important to create safer opportunities for local cyclists.
“Obviously, infrastructure has improved a lot over the last 20-30 years and seeing things like this is prerty amazing and is great for everyone who loves getting outdoors.
“As the years go on, everyone is wanting to get outdoors more, pick up bikes and things like that. This helps get those people more motivated.”
TMR’s south coast director Andrew Wheeler said the team was excited to celebrate a “local hero”.
“Logan Martin grew up in Logan and continues to share the importance of a lifestyle that includes active transport,” Mr Wheeler said.
“His legacy will stand tall in the growing community of Springwood.”
