The Logan Salvation Army branch has founds it feet in its new home at Logan Central and is aiming to meet the city’s unmet demand
The Salvos closed in Logan in 2022, seemingly for good, after their tenancy ended.
They returned to Slacks Creek in 2024 and have just moved into new premises on Ewing Road, Logan Central.
Lieutenant Ashley Beirmann said the local Salvos team had already helped hundreds of vulnerable locals.
Over the last year, more than 800 locals have accessed the Salvos’ emergency relief support.
And every week, they are handing out meals to about 40 people.
Mr Beirmann said locals of all demographics were reaching out for help.
“Tragedy strikes very quickly,” he said.
“Our support is not defined to somebody who might just be on Youth Allowance. It’s for all that experience hardship.
“We have had some recent asylum seekers that are in the gap and we are supporting them – it is a huge gap that gets left because there is no income coming in until the wheels of support get into place.”
The team is currently raising funds for its Red Shield Appeal, which goes towards Salvos’ support programs.
“Red Shield is for areas like Christmas. Last year the shield supported 400 local children,” Mr Beirmann said.
“It will either be food or presents that kids miss out on.”
Throughout the year, Salvos also supports local schools that are some of the most disadvantaged in the country.
However, Mr Beirmann said raising funds had been a challenge, particularly during a time of such high demand.
“There is a lot of demand – there is always a lot.
“When you are not in a place for two years, it hasn’t had a presence so getting momentum for funding and those little things is a challenge.”
