Barbeque competitions take over Logan

Things are getting smokey in Logan.

Competitive smokers and anyone with a taste for rich, hearty meats are invited to Distillery Road Market’s (DRM) first ever barbeque festival.

Smoke-filled air, strong smells and large crowds previously spotted at similar festivals held recently in west Logan are headed for the city’s east, with Eagleby’s DRM hosting it’s BBQ Fest in June this year.

The event will include a competition sanction by the The Australian BBQ Alliance, the country’s leading barbeque and smoking society.

It is hoped the event attracts Queensland’s “top pitmasters”.

From brisket to pork ribs and everything in between, festivalgoers can indulge in food, drink, cooking demonstations, artisan market stalls and live entertainment.

“We’re thrilled to be hosting our first of hopefully many more to come BBQ Festivals at Distillery Road Market,” said Kenton Campbell, the founder of Distillery Road Market and the neighbouring Perentie Brewery.

“This festival is a true celebration of craftsmanship and community, and we can’t wait to see some of Australia’s best pitmasters as well as those with a love of barbeque competing in their first competition showcasing their incredible skills.

“DRM was built to bring people together over great food and drink, and there’s no better way to do that than through barbecue.”

The barbeque competition will see pitmasters go head-to-head in a battle of technique, flavour, and fire.

Competitors will vie for top honours in categories including brisket, pork ribs and chicken, with one smoker crowned the Overall Grand Champion.

This won’t be the first meat-based festival in Logan.

The recent success of the second Flame BBQ Street Festival saw thousands flock to Jimboomba, with the event subsequently gaining national attention.

The festival was in February this year nominated for Best Festival in the inaugural Countrytown Awards, a nationwide competition celebrating the best in country music and events.

Last year’s event, which was hosted at the Jimboomba Sports Park, saw country duo Zac and George headline, alongside Stockleigh local Jake Whittaker, who recently made it to the Top 30 of this year’s season of Australian Idol.

The Flame Festival lost to the popular CMC Rocks music festival at Ipswich.
