Logan locals ready to weather the storm

Logan is no stranger to storms and flooding, having lived through a 2023 Christmas night ‘tornado’ and recent floods in 2022 and 2017.

However, many residents may not have experienced a cyclone – unless, of course, they’ve migrated south from the sub-tropical North Queensland region.

Sarah Weir, who is well-versed in wild weather, having helped coordinate volunteer efforts during the 2023 Christmas Day storm, says preparation and community support should be top priorities in the face of such events.

“To prepare, follow the advice of professional agencies,” she said.

“Subscribe or add to your favourites on social media: QLD Police, your State Member of Parliament, Logan City Council, and Mayor Jon Raven.”

Mrs Weir also advises residents to save the emergency alert number in their phones to receive important text messages before, during, and after a cyclone.

“Once the storm has passed, and it is safe to do so, start by checking on your neighbours,” she said.

“But please, don’t go driving around to check out the damage, that just makes it harder for emergency services to do their job.”

If you’re keen to lend a hand, Mrs Weir suggests heading to your local emergency drop-in centre to see how you can assist.

Otherwise, staying home and spending time with family is the best way to ride out the aftermath safely.
