Hotter, wetter summer ahead

A hot, wet summer lies ahead for the residents of Logan, with minimum temperatures four times more likely to rise above average.

The long-range forecast for January to March in 2025 shows conditions are likely to be wetter than average across the city, according to the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM).

A BOM spokesperson said there was around 1.5 times the normal chance of unusually wet weather.

This places early next year in the top 20% of historical rainfall records for Logan.

“Maximum and minimum temperatures are very likely to be warmer than average,” the spokesperson said.

Maximum temperatures in the city are 1.5 times more likely to increase, while minimum temperatures are four times the normal chance of being unusually high.

These increases would put next year’s temperatures in the top 20% ever recorded in Logan.

The spokesperson did not comment on whether the city would face storms as severe as those in the Christmas period of 2023/24.

They did, however, say there was an increased risk of thunderstorms in the area, which is expected to extend through the summer and into early Autumn.

“However, the risk of thunderstorms can change daily and on a local scale, so we provide the chance of thunderstorms as part of our 7-day location forecasts,” the spokesperson said.

“Thunderstorms can be quite localised and can develop, evolve and dissipate quickly.

“Severe Thunderstorm Warnings are issued and updated frequently when phenomena such as large hail, giant hail, damaging winds, heavy rainfall, intense rainfall or tornadoes are expected in an area.”

These warnings, as well as other updates regarding severe weather, can be found on BOMs website and via the BOM Weather App.
