Boating haven for model enthusiasts

Tygum Lagoon in Waterford West transforms into a bustling mini harbour for model boating three times a week, thanks to passionate locals at Logan City Marine Modellers.

This long-established club, based out of a blue and yellow brick clubhouse at Tygum Park, has been operating for over 30 years and now boasts 60 members of all ages from Logan and across Southeast Queensland.

The group is dedicated to building and operating detailed radio-controlled scale models of a variety of watercraft, including tugboats, yachts, speedboats, and even navy ships.

Club Vice-Commodore Tim Smith says the hobby is “nice and relaxing” and has built long lasting relationships.

“We usually have about 25 to 30 members show up on Sundays as that’s our popular scale day,” he said.

“Some don’t even bring boats and just come for the friendship the hobby provides.”

The lagoon comes alive every Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday morning as members gather to showcase their creations.

The hobby has become a local attraction, with families often stopping by to watch the different model boats glide across the water.

For those curious about the hobby, Logan City Marine Modellers offer an open invitation to visit.

“All they need is to come down and have a chat,” Mr Smith said.

“We have a couple of club boats they can use to see if they enjoy it.”

Newcomers can try up to three sessions with club-owned boats before committing to an annual membership fee of $60.

“It’s a great way to start your weekend by the water with some really great people,” Mr Smith said.

“And who knows, you could become like me and be totally addicted to remote control boats.”

Meets take place Wednesday and Sunday from 7am with sailing regattas every second Saturday afternoon from 12pm.
