Weather-proof your property

A free workshop for locals to prepare their property for wild weather is on this week as Logan suburbs remain among the “hardest hit” by inclement weather in the country.

With extreme weather becoming more frequent and severe, Logan residents have been urged to attend an emergency preparedness event run by Australian Red Cross and NRMA Insurance on Wednesday.

Participants will learn about the local weather risks and how to prepare for an emergency.

Organisers say locals will be equipped with all the necessary tools to get through a severe weather event, including key contacts, meeting places, animal plans, key documents, special items, medical information and stress management strategies.

In autumn this years, Logan-Beaudesert was the third hardest-hit region in Australia, accounting for almost one in ten (8.33 per cent) of all NRMA claims.

Greenbank was the “second worst-hit” suburb in the state.

“Our research shows only half of Australians have taken steps to prepare for extreme weather and many don’t feel prepared to respond should an extreme weather event occur,” NRMA chief customer and marketing officer Michelle Klein said.

“Through these workshops we want to help Logan residents better understand their local risks and provide the information and tools to get prepared.

“Taking steps to prepare before an event happens goes a long way in protecting yourself, your loved ones, your community and the things you care about.”

The event will be held on 11 September at Logan Central Library at 10am.
