Rugby matriarch remembered

A beloved stalwart of Logan Brothers Rugby League club and the mother of NRL legend Cameron Smith has died.

Sonia Smith passed away late last month at the age of 66, leaving her friends and family missing her “unwavering support”.

Logan Brothers club president Duane Antcliff said Ms Smith was a beautiful person.

“She was just a character. Always a ray of sunshine,” he said.

“She loved everybody, and everybody loved her.

“She didn’t worry about race, colour or creed, or anything like that.”

Ms Smith was made a life member of the club more than a decade ago.

“I’ve been at the club for 33 years, and she was already here with Cameron when he was a young fella,” Mr Antcliffe said.

He said that, according to Ms Smith, if “you walked through the doors of Logan Brothers, you were someone from Logan Brothers”.

“End of story.”

Cameron Smith spent 12 years playing for Logan Brothers alongside his brother Matt, while his mum managed, and his dad coached.

He attended Marsden State High School.

He went on to play for the Melbourne Storm, becoming captain of the Australian team and helping the Maroons win eight straight State of Origin series.
