Children and families in Logan should prepare for fun thanks to a massive funding boost to two major lifestyle projects.
A total of more than $21 million will go towards upgrading the Beenleigh Aquatic Centre and building the Waterford West District Park, which will be the most expensive park in the city’s history.
The money will come from the SEQ Liveability Fund, financed by the Australian and Queensland governments, as well as the south-east Queensland Council of Mayors.
The Waterford West District Park, set to start construction next year, is one of the largest ever park developments in Logan.
The park will feature a water play zone containing tipping buckets, splash pads and water jets, as well as a running track, a cafe and cooking area.
The upgrades of Beenleigh Aquatic Centre will see a brand new 50-metre, eight-lane Olympic pool replace the current six-lane pool, which opened in September 1964.
The current pool is non-metric and has a length of 33-and-a-third yards long, or just over 30 metres.
The new pool will be suitable to host official competitions and swim training, while also providing recreational swimmers with more room to cool off, with heating for the cooler months.
Expected to be completed sometime next year, the centre will also feature a large water play area, modern and accessible changerooms, multipurpose rooms, shaded outdoor seating and a kiosk.
Mayor Jon Raven welcomed the funding, which he said would benefit locals for “generations to come”.
“Waterford West District Park is the largest investment in a new park in our city’s history,” Cr Raven said.
“The community is excited about the master plan we’ve created for the site, with a water play area, a playground, paths, barbecues and picnic shelters providing a range of recreation opportunities.
“The Beenleigh Aquatic Centre redevelopment delivers a second 50 metre pool for Logan in the lead-up to the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games as well as other modern facilities for local residents.”
