Strength showdown – Queensland’s fittest mum

Mums across the south east battled it out over the weekend to be named Queensland’s fittest mum.

Local mum’s Roi Beale and Putiputi Ropata clinched ultimate victory at the competition, which was held at CrossFit Iron Barbell in Meadowbrook.

The CrossFit competition, called The Fit Mumma Classic, saw more than 180 mothers, stepmothers and grandmothers take part in a series of rigorous exercises.

Over three workouts and a final heat, the women paired up in teams to out-run, out-burpee, and out-lift each other.

“All in front of their families, friends and most importantly their children,” event organiser Patsy Tierny said.

This year’s turnout saw triple the number of last year’s, which was held on the Gold Coast.

Ms Tierny said the fitness competition was created to give mums something to train for “that is just for them”.

“Being a mum can be both time consuming and challenging, so their own fitness can often get put on the backburner,” she said.

“The Fit Mumma Classic is a chance for mums to prioritise their own health and fitness and then take part in a day where they get to celebrate their achievements.

“Unlike other CrossFit or fitness events the mums know that everyone they are competing against has their own challenges like sick kids, babies that wake up all night, unruly teenagers.

“The fact that they are all mums definitely levels the playing field.”

Each team of two entered a category best fit for them, ranging from beginner all the way to masters (for those aged 40+).

Each of the three workouts lasted for 12 minutes and were tailored to each categories’ abilities.

“For instance, one workout called ‘MUMbelievable’ involves synchronised dumbbell snatches and ring rows for the beginners,” Ms Tierny said.

“Whilst the same workout is heavy dumbbell snatches and chest to bar pullups for the advanced.

“The top five teams in each category then compete in a winner takes all final.”

She said a large part of the day was fundraising, which this year went towards Baby Give Back.

“The competitors all bring a packet of nappies to donate in an attempt to fill the Baby Give Back delivery van – to then be distributed to families in need,” Ms Tierny said.

She said CrossFit was growing in popularity around Logan.

“The host gym of the Fit Mumma Classic, CrossFit Iron Barbell, moved to their new facility at Meadowbrook early this year as they had outgrown their original gym,” Ms Tierny said.

“Members come from all walks of life, but with CrossFit Iron Barbell being owned by a young local couple, Jess McCabe and Adam Aitken, they have noticed an increase in families and especially mums.”

Jess McCabe, a mother herself, said CrossFit particularly suited mums as it was “time efficient, effective and community based”.
