Mayoral candidate and councillor Jon Raven has promised to build a wildlife hospital at the emerging Jimboomba depot if he is elected.
Cr Raven took to social media to announce he would support the establishment of a not-for-profit wildlife hospital at Jimboomba if he were elected Mayor of Logan.
He said a location and initial funding for the hospital was already secured, but before the proposal is approved, it needs the support of the other councillors.
“97 koalas and 187 kangaroos have been rescued by volunteers in the last 6 months in Logan,” Cr Raven said.
“As mayor I will support additional funding for volunteers’ wildlife carers and rescuers.”
The proposed animal triage could be one of many establishments at the Jimboomba super depot currently being built.
The first stage of construction is anticipated to complete later this year, but the remaining stages are reportedly years away.
Local councillor Scott Bannan, who worked on plans for the triage centre behind the scenes, fought for the funding to build the depot two years ago.
“I was lucky enough, with the support of my fellow councillors and the mayor, to win the funding from the state government,” Cr Bannan said.
“The first stage is a large community space, but I can’t comment about what will be in there yet.”
He said a wildlife triage centre was something the community “wants and needs”, and it’s something he would push for with the support of council.
