Logan homelessness on rise as Christmas comes

The number of Logan residents facing homelessness is on the rise, according to local financial services organisation YFS.

YFS CEO Christopher John has revealed that staff are receiving around 35 calls a day from locals who are either homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.

“Over the last three years median rents have increased by $150 a week in Logan,” Mr John said.

“Our financial hub is also hearing from more and more people who are risk of becoming homeless due to rent arrears and mortgage defaults.

“The sad reality is that we can only do so much to help many of these people because there is so little affordable housing available.”

Mr John said YFS, along with many other community organisations, were “advocating strongly for all levels of government to work together to address the housing crisis and increase homelessness support services”.

He said Christmas would be a difficult time for many locals, but urged parents to pay rent and mortgages before purchasing presents.

“Kids are better off with a home and modest presents then more expensive presents,” Mr John said.

“As we celebrate Christmas this year, we are also aware it will be particularly hard for many this year.

“We have seen some amazing generosity from our community providing presents for families doing it tough.

“This is much appreciated with so many more people in our region facing homelessness or unable to afford Christmas presents due to the rising cost of living.”

YFS will be available for urgent matters between Christmas and New Year.

On these days, staff can be contacted on 3826 1500.
