Heatwave havoc as summer sizzles

The Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) has warned locals to remain vigilant during long, hot periods as summertime 000 calls average 3900 a day.

While extremely hot individual days contribute to the high-volume of calls, a QAS spokesperson said, the worst influence was the low severity but longer and more consistent heat waves.

“Remain vigilant and keep up protective measures even after the peak of a heatwave has passed,” QAS Director Lisa Dibley said.

“Check on our vulnerable persons, particularly the elderly, as they’re less likely to utilise cooling assists, such as air conditioners or fans.”
