Dementia choir an inspiration

Last week I had the immense privilege to attend the meeting of the Logan Dementia Choir who only formed eight weeks ago.

The choir was created for those living in my local community with a Dementia Diagnosis, however it also extends to support their spouse, family and friends if it’s needed at times.

The Logan Dementia Choir was started by Logan Local, Ross Wiseman who himself suffers from Dementia.

Ross said that his own diagnosis spiralled him into a depression and made him question his self-worth.

After his dementia diagnosis, Ross lost his driver’s license and in turn his independence, but not his passion to serve his community which he continues to do to this day – just commendable.

It was after Ross saw an English Choir use music to treat Dementia, that he went away, did some research and stumbled upon ‘reminiscence therapy’ – this is a treatment involving the discussion of past events and experiences through the use of music, photos and also the use of modern technology.

The Logan Dementia Choir have their first performance at Memory Lane Cafe at Underwood in November and I for one will be in the front row watching with immense pride seeing them perform.

The Logan Dementia Choir are currently in search of new members. So, if you know someone who wants to get involved, you can search for the Logan Dementia Alliance who are now on Facebook.
